Though, for most of the missionaries, spreading the gospel was an important for their faith and well intended, for the colnising companies and governments it was an important part of their scheme to ‘spread civilisation’. The ways of native African were too savage for them to bear and marketing was done to missionaries all over Europe to ‘bring sanity into the continent’.
